Hair porosity refers to how well your hair absorbs and holds moisture. Knowing your hair’s porosity will guide you to the best products and care techniques for your hair. Low porosity hair, like mine, resists moisture so I have noticed better results when I leave a deep conditioner in longer. The first step is figuring out YOUR porosity.
A quick way is by placing a 2 inch strand of your hair in a glass of water. Wait 3-5 minutes and your hair porosity will determine where your strand ends up. If it floats, you may have low porosity or “not absorbent” hair. If it stays in the middle, your hair is likely normal and if it sinks to the bottom, you have high porosity hair. (See photos below)
